CREATIVE EXPRESSION

CONVERSATIONAL SERMON

Mark 2: 1-12

Some days later he went back to Capernaum and was rumored to be at home. And many people crowded around so there was no longer any room, even outside the door. Then he started speaking to them. Some people then show up with a paralytic being carried by four of them. And when they were not able to get near him on account of the crowd, they removed the roof above him. After digging it out, they lowered the mat on which the paralytic was lying. When Jesus noticed their trust, he says to the paralytic, “Child, your sins are forgiven.”

Some of the scholars were sitting there and listening wondering: “Why does that fellow say such things? He’s blaspheming! Who can forgive sins except the one God?”

And right away, because Jesus sensed in his spirit that they were raising questions like this among themselves, he says to them: “Why do you entertain questions about these things? Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up, pick up your mat and walk’?” But so that you may realize that on earth the son of Adam has authority to forgive sins, he says to the paralytic, “You there, get up, pick up your mat and go home!”

And he got up, picked his mat right up, and walked out as everyone looked on. So they all became ecstatic, extolled God, and exclaimed, “We’ve never seen the likes of this!”

When will you be Angelic? When will you take off your clothes? When will you look at yourself through the grave? When will you live with naked honesty? When will the world of “heaven” meet the world of earth?’ Until we meet again, let us keep these challenges close to heart. And continue to drink in the spirit!

OPENING PRAYER

by Pat Kozak, Life Prayers (p. 193)

Rise up, child of earth

Let life rise up in you,

full-term, new-born.

Time enough in wondrous darkness,

Echoed sounds of voices, stirrings,

splashings of new life.

Relinquish to memory this one mystery

We yearn to know and will again

in after-death.

So much latent

still to rise

Until our risings lifts us to a depth

that questions every truth

we’ve ever known.

Mud-stirred of first clay.

Plaything of a potter who fell in love

with her hands’ work.

Blessed be her handiwork.

Blessed be the work of her hands.

Blessed be.

CONVERSATIONAL SERMON

Mark 1:1-8

The good news of Jesus the Anointed begins with something Isaiah the prophet wrote:

            Here is my messenger,

whom I send on ahead of you

            to prepare your way!

A voice of someone shouting in the wilderness:

“Make ready the way of the Lord,

            Make his paths straight.”

So John the Baptizer appeared in the wilderness calling for baptism and a change of heart that lead to forgiveness of sins.

CONVERSATIONAL SERMON
Psalm 133
1How very good and pleasant it is when brothers and sisters live together in unity!
2It is like the precious oil on the head, running down upon the beard, on the beard of Aaron, running down over the collar of his robes.
3It is like the dew of Hermon, which falls on the mountains of Zion. For there the Lord ordained his blessing, life forevermore.

Leviticus 8:10-12
10Then Moses took the anointing oil and anointed the tabernacle and all that was in it, and sanctified them. 11He sprinkled some of it on the altar seven times, and anointed the altar and all its utensils, and the basin and its base, to sanctify them. 12He poured some of the anointing oil on Aaron’s head and anointed him, to sanctify him.

OPENING PRAYER

Gethsemane ~Mary Olive

The grass never sleeps.
Or the roses.
Nor does the lily have a secret eye that shuts until morning.
Jesus said, wait with me. But the disciples slept.
The cricket has such splendid fringe on its feet,
and it sings, have you noticed, with its whole body,
and heaven knows if it ever sleeps.
Jesus said, wait with me. And maybe the stars did, maybe
the wind wound itself into a silver tree, and didn't move,

maybe, the lake far away, where once he walked as on a blue pavement,
lay still and waited, wild awake.
Oh the dear bodies, slumped and eye-shut,

that could not keep that vigil,

how they must have wept,
so utterly human, knowing this too
must be a part of the story.

CONVERSATIONAL SERMON

Mark 16:1-8

And when the sabbath day was over, Mary of Magdala and Mary the mother of James and Salome bought spices so that they could go and embalm him. And very early on Sunday they got to the tomb just as the sun was coming up. And they had been asking themselves, "Who will help us roll the stone away from the opening of the tomb?" Then they look up and discover that the stone has been rolled away! (For in fact the stone was very large.)

And when they went into the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the right, wearing a white robe, and they were apprehensive.

He says to them, "Don’t be alarmed! You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene who was crucified. He was raised, he is not here. Look at the spot where they put him! But go and tell his disciples, including ‘Rock,’ ‘He is going ahead of you to Galilee! There you will see him, just as he told you.’

And once they got outside, they ran away from the tomb, because great fear and excitement got the better of them. And they didn’t breathe a word of it to anyone: talk about terrified…

CONVERSATIONAL SERMON

Mark 11:1-11

When they get close to Jerusalem, near Bethphage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives, he sends off two of his disciples with these instructions, "Go into the village across the way, and right after you enter it, you’ll find a colt tied up, one that has never been ridden. Untie it and bring it here. If anyone questions you, 'Why are you doing this?' tell them, ‘Its master has need it and he will send it back here right away.'"

They set out and found a colt tied up at the door out on the street, and they untied it. Some of the people standing around started saying to them, "What do you think you’re doing, untying that colt?" But they said just what Jesus had told them to say, so they left them alone.

So they bring the colt to Jesus, and they throw their cloaks over it; then he got on it. And many people spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut leafy branches from the fields. Those leading the way and those following kept shouting,

"Hosanna! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord!” Blessed is the coming of our father David! “Hosanna” in the highest!

And he went into Jerusalem to the temple area and took stock of everything, but, since the hour was already late, he returned to Bethany with the twelve.

The Usual

Hi there,

Just wanted to post that even though the most recent liturgies haven't been posted here on the blog these last few weeks, we're still gathering as usual; Saturdays, 5PM at The Dugout Cafe.

We've had different people leading our time together and so the liturgies don't always make it on here.

But come join in anytime :-)

Teach us, Spirit Divine, not to torture ourselves, not to make martyrs out of ourselves through stifling reflection, but rather teach us to breathe deeply in faith that you are near to us. – Be near to us then, that we may feel a joyous assurance that you are not far from us, but that we live and move and have our being in you.

CONVERSATIONAL SERMON
Mark 1:9-15

During that same period Jesus came from Nazareth, Galilee, and was baptized in the Jordan by John. And just as he got up out of the water, he saw the skies torn open and the spirit descending down like a dove.

There was also a voice from the skies: "You are my favored son – I fully appreciate you.”

And right away the spirit drives him out into the wilderness, where he remained for forty days, being put to the test by Satan. While he was living there with the wild animals, the heavenly messengers looked after him.

After John was locked up, Jesus came to Galilee proclaiming God’s good news. His message went: "The time is up: A Divine new way has commenced. Change your ways, and put your trust in this good news!"

READINGS

Mark 1:32-39

That evening, at sundown, they brought to him all who were sick or possessed with demons. And the whole city was gathered around the door. And he cured many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons; and he would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew him.

In the morning, while it was still very dark, he got up and went out to a deserted place, and there he prayed.

And Simon and his companions hunted for him. When they found him, they said to him, "Everyone is searching for you." He answered, "Let us go on to the neighboring towns, so that I may proclaim the message there also; for that is what I came out to do." And he went throughout Galilee, proclaiming the message in their synagogues and casting out demons.

· What are our initial thoughts and observations about the text?

· What questions does it raise?

· What topics does it make us think of and can we make connections with our conversation about Genesis from two weeks ago?

· "How do these texts propose a manifestation of the divine?"

RITUAL OF CONFESSION

In stillness, we find our vision. In stillness, we experience God’s Divine voice amid all the other voices of life. Such stillness strengthens both our sense of self as well as our sense of creative participation. It may also, as Jesus exemplifies, give us guidance for a deeper and broader participation with the Divine.
